CT Scan Hip Joint

A CT scan of the hip joint is a specialized X-ray exam that uses rotating X-rays and computer reconstruction to create detailed cross-sectional images of the hip’s bones, cartilage and surrounding soft tissues. It helps diagnose fractures, arthritis, bone tumors, infections, congenital or postoperative issues and aids surgical planning. It is quick and noninvasive but involves more radiation than a plain X‑ray.

The most common indication for CT of the hip is suspected fracture—particularly occult femoral‑neck or acetabular fractures after trauma when plain radiographs are inconclusive. CT provides high‑resolution detection of fracture lines, displacement and comminution, and helps assess acetabular involvement and periarticular bone for surgical planning, prosthesis evaluation, or when complex anatomy needs precise delineation.

A hip CT scan itself usually takes about 5–15 minutes. Including registration, dressing, positioning and image processing, expect 20–30 minutes. If intravenous contrast is needed, allow extra time for injection and monitoring — total time may be 30–60 minutes. Complex studies or facility wait times can extend the appointment, so plan for up to an hour or more.

Yes. CT scans can detect hip arthritis by showing bony changes—joint space narrowing, osteophytes, subchondral sclerosis and cysts—and are excellent for detailed bone assessment, alignment, and preoperative planning. However, CT is less sensitive than MRI for early cartilage or soft-tissue disease; plain X-rays are usually first-line. CT also exposes patients to ionising radiation, so use is guided by clinical need.

Yes. CT scans excellently show bone and joint structure: fractures, bone alignment, joint-space narrowing, bone spurs, calcifications and complex anatomy. They are less sensitive than MRI for soft tissues such as cartilage, ligaments, and early inflammatory changes. CT arthrography or 3D CT can improve joint-surface detail and is used when MRI is contraindicated or for complex fractures and preoperative planning.

A hip CT is usually performed with the patient lying supine (on their back) on the CT table, feet-first into the scanner. The hips are centered in the gantry; legs may be straight or slightly internally rotated to align the femoral necks. Arms are placed overhead or at the sides for comfort. Immobilization pads are used and breath-holds may be requested.
