CT Scan Foot

A CT scan of the foot provides detailed cross‑sectional images of bones and joints, revealing fractures (including subtle or complex breaks), bone alignment, joint surface injuries, bone infections (osteomyelitis), tumors or cysts, and foreign bodies. It offers better detail than X‑rays for complex anatomy and preoperative planning, and can produce 3D reconstructions; soft‑tissue structures are visible but less well defined than on MRI.

A foot CT scan is quick. The actual scan time is typically 1–5 minutes, while the entire appointment—including check-in, positioning and instructions—usually takes 10–30 minutes. Preparation is minimal (remove shoes or jewelry). If contrast is needed, allow extra time for injection and brief monitoring. Staff will explain the process and answer questions before you leave.

CT is best for detailed bone evaluation—acute fractures, complex fractures, small bone fragments and pre‑op planning; it’s fast and tolerates metal hardware. MRI is superior for soft tissues—ligaments, tendons, cartilage, bone marrow edema, occult fractures and infection—without radiation. Choice depends on suspected injury: CT for bony detail, MRI for soft‑tissue, marrow, or unexplained persistent pain.

Remove shoes, socks, jewelry, watches, and any metal or rigid orthotics from the foot/ankle; roll up pants or change into a gown if requested. Avoid clothing with zippers, snaps, or underwire. Inform staff about implants or pregnancy. You’ll usually be asked to lie still while the foot is positioned on the scanner.
