CT Scan Enteroclysis

CT scan enteroclysis is a specialized CT exam of the small intestine where contrast is infused directly into the small bowel via a nasojejunal or nasogastric tube while intravenous contrast is given. It yields highly detailed, distended small‑bowel images to assess Crohn’s disease, strictures, tumors, obscure bleeding, or obstruction. The procedure needs bowel prep, tube placement, and involves ionizing radiation.

Enteroclysis is a specialised imaging test of the small intestine in which contrast is delivered directly into the bowel to provide detailed views. It’s used to detect and define small-bowel conditions — Crohn’s disease, strictures, fistulae, tumors, occult bleeding, malabsorption causes, and partial obstruction — and to assess mucosal detail and motility when other tests (endoscopy, CT) are inconclusive.

CT enteroclysis is generally safe and effective for detailed small-bowel imaging. It uses a nasoenteric tube and contrast, so risks include radiation exposure, contrast reactions, tube-related discomfort or nasal/throat pain, rare bowel perforation, aspiration, and infection. Enteroclysis is often uncomfortable more than severely painful. Passing a tube through the nose and infusing contrast can cause gagging, nasal irritation, abdominal cramping, fullness and nausea. Most people experience mild-to-moderate discomfort during the exam; severe pain is rare. Local anaesthetic for the nostril, gradual infusion and reassurance can help. Temporary bloating or cramping may continue briefly afterward.

Prepare by following bowel‑prep instructions (laxative/enema) the day before and drinking only clear fluids; fast for 4–6 hours before the scan. You may receive oral/IV contrast and a small tube into the small bowel—expect mild discomfort. Remove metal, wear loose clothes, and bring a medicines list. Inform staff if pregnant, allergic to iodine/shellfish, diabetic, or have kidney problems; you may be asked to pause metformin.
