A CT scan of the chest and abdomen produces detailed cross-sectional images of lungs, heart, major blood vessels, pleura, lymph nodes, ribs, liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, adrenals, bowel, and surrounding soft tissues. It detects tumors, infections, inflammation, bleeding, fluid collections, stones, bowel obstruction, vascular problems (aneurysm, dissection, pulmonary embolism), and trauma-related injuries, guiding diagnosis and treatment.

A combined chest and abdomen CT usually takes only a few minutes for the scan itself—typically 5 to 10 minutes. Including preparation (consent, changing, IV contrast placement), the actual appointment commonly lasts 20–45 minutes. If contrast monitoring, additional imaging or facility wait times are needed, total time can approach an hour.

Before a chest/abdominal CT, follow instructions: fast 4–6 hours if contrast is planned, drink clear fluids and stay hydrated, and remove metal jewelry. Tell staff about allergies (especially iodine/contrast), pregnancy, medications (metformin—usually stopped at imaging and withheld for 48 hours after contrast), and kidney problems; prior scans may be requested. Arrive early; you may receive oral or IV contrast and premedication if needed.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal (no zippers, buttons, underwire bras, or metal fasteners). Remove jewelry, piercings, belts, and watches before the scan. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown, especially if contrast is used. Carry a list of medications and inform staff if pregnant or diabetic. Empty pockets and avoid metal hair clips or metallic-threaded clothing.

If a CT shows a potentially life‑threatening problem, radiology will prioritize it as “stat” and alert the ordering clinician immediately—often by phone—so action can begin within minutes to a few hours. A preliminary urgent read is typically available quickly, with a formal signed report completed within 24 hours. Outpatient critical findings are usually communicated to the patient or doctor the same day.

An abdominal CT can detect many primary and metastatic cancers: liver (primary hepatocellular carcinoma and metastases), pancreas, kidneys (renal cell carcinoma), adrenal glands, stomach and bowel (gastric and colorectal cancers), gallbladder and bile ducts, spleen, ovaries and other pelvic masses, retroperitoneal lymphomas and peritoneal metastases. It is commonly used to stage disease and guide further tests or biopsy.
