A CT scan of the brain and face uses X‑rays and computer processing to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the skull, brain, sinuses and facial bones. It detects bleeding, stroke, fractures, tumors, infections and sinus disease. The test is quick and noninvasive; sometimes contrast dye highlights vessels or tissue. It involves low-dose ionizing radiation and may be avoided in pregnancy.

A standard head CT primarily images the brain and skull, and may capture parts of the upper face, but it does not reliably provide detailed views of facial bones, sinuses, or orbits. For suspected facial fractures, sinus disease, or orbital injuries a dedicated CT face/maxillofacial study is ordered. Ask your clinician or radiology team if facial imaging should be added.

A CT scan of the face provides detailed cross-sectional images of facial bones, sinuses, orbits, nasal cavity and adjacent soft tissues. It detects fractures, sinusitis, orbital injuries, abscesses, tumors, foreign bodies and dental or congenital abnormalities. With intravenous contrast it can assess blood vessels and inflammatory or neoplastic enhancement. It’s commonly used for trauma evaluation, surgical planning and infection or cancer diagnosis.

A face CT scan is done by removing jewelry, confirming medical history and contrast allergies, and obtaining IV access if contrast is needed. The patient lies supine with the head immobilized; thin-slice helical images of the facial bones and sinuses are acquired with axial data and multiplanar reconstructions. Scan takes minutes; watch for contrast reactions and obtain a radiologist’s report. Follow post-scan instructions.

A face CT scan usually takes about 5–15 minutes for the imaging itself; positioning and paperwork may extend the appointment to 15–30 minutes. The actual image acquisition is often under a minute to a few minutes. If contrast is needed, expect additional time for IV placement and monitoring, adding roughly 15–60 minutes.

MRI is generally better for detailed brain imaging—superior for tumors, demyelination, ischemic stroke (after the initial hours), and soft-tissue contrast—while CT is faster and preferred in emergencies to detect acute hemorrhage, skull fractures, and trauma. CT is more available and quick; MRI avoids ionizing radiation but can be limited by implants, claustrophobia, or longer scan times. Choice depends on clinical context.
