After a head CT with contrast, common mild effects include warmth or flushing, metallic taste, nausea, headache and brief injection‑site pain. Some people develop allergic‑type reactions such as itching, hives or rash; rare severe reactions can cause breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, dizziness or low blood pressure. Contrast may affect kidney function in vulnerable patients—seek immediate care for severe or worsening symptoms.

Iodinated CT contrast is rapidly cleared—plasma half‑life about 1.5–2 hours and most is excreted by kidneys within 24 hours in people with normal renal function. Contrast doesn’t enter normal brain tissue; if the blood–brain barrier is disrupted (stroke, tumor, inflammation) enhancement may be visible for hours to days. Impaired kidney function can prolong systemic and imaging persistence.

Usually no—non-contrast CT is the first-line study for acute head trauma and suspected stroke because it best detects fresh blood. Contrast is added when evaluating tumors, infections/abscesses, inflammation, or vascular lesions (CT angiography), since it shows abnormal enhancement. The need for contrast depends on the clinical question, kidney function, and allergy history; your doctor or radiologist will decide.

A CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to produce detailed cross-sectional images of a toddler’s body. It’s used to diagnose head injuries, fractures, infections, abdominal problems and some congenital conditions. Toddlers may need sedation or immobilization to stay still; pediatric low-dose protocols minimize radiation. A pediatric radiologist and clinical team weigh risks versus benefits and will discuss alternatives and aftercare with parents.

People who should avoid CT scans with iodinated contrast include those with a known allergy to contrast agents or prior severe reaction; patients with impaired kidney function, severe dehydration, or on dialysis; pregnant women unless absolutely necessary; individuals with uncontrolled hyperthyroidism; and people taking metformin who have reduced renal function (may need temporary interruption). Discuss individual risks with your clinician.

Most iodinated CT contrast is eliminated by the kidneys; in people with normal renal function, over 90% is excreted within 24 hours and virtually all within 48 hours. Plasma half-life is about 1.5–2 hours. If you have reduced kidney function, clearance can be much longer and your doctor may monitor or delay contrast. Stay well hydrated unless instructed otherwise.
