A CT scan of the ankle with contrast is a computed tomography exam that uses X-rays plus injected iodine-based contrast dye to highlight blood vessels and soft tissues. It creates detailed cross-sectional images to better detect fractures, ligament or tendon injury, infection, inflammation, tumors, or vascular problems. Preparation usually includes screening for contrast allergies and checking kidney function; the injection may cause brief warmth.

A foot CT is usually done without contrast for bone assessment, fractures, or hardware evaluation. A CT scan of the ankle typically requires only a few minutes of imaging—often under 5 minutes, with scans completed in seconds. Including check-in, changing, positioning and image review, plan for about 15–30 minutes at the radiology department. If IV contrast is needed, allow extra time for injection, monitoring and paperwork, extending the visit to 30–60 minutes.

For initial assessment of an injured ankle, plain X‑rays are best to detect fractures and alignment. For persistent pain or suspected ligament, tendon, cartilage injury, or occult fracture, MRI is the most informative. CT excels at complex bony fractures and preoperative planning. Ultrasound can assess superficial tendons dynamically. Choice depends on clinical findings and specialist advice.

A CT scan with contrast is ordered when clearer differentiation of tissues and blood vessels is needed. Contrast highlights blood flow and enhances organs, tumors, infections, inflammation, active bleeding, and vascular problems (aneurysm, clot, stenosis). It helps detect and stage cancers, locate abscesses, guide biopsies, and assess trauma or unexplained symptoms more accurately than non-contrast CT.
