CT Scan Abdomen Dual Phase

A dual-phase CT scan acquires two sets of contrast-enhanced images at different times—typically arterial and portal venous phases—after intravenous contrast injection. This timing highlights blood flow and tissue enhancement patterns, improving detection and characterization of liver, pancreas, kidney and vascular lesions and active bleeding. It helps distinguish hypervascular from hypovascular lesions and guides diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning.

Abdominal CT typically includes: non-contrast (pre-contrast) to detect calcifications and hemorrhage; arterial phase (~20–30 s) for arterial anatomy and hypervascular lesions; portal venous phase (~60–70 s) for liver parenchyma and venous structures; nephrographic phase (~80–100 s) for renal parenchyma; delayed/equilibrium phase (several minutes) for urinary tract, biliary evaluation, and lesion washout.

A dual CT scan (dual-energy CT) uses two X‑ray energy levels simultaneously to capture images. Comparing high‑ and low‑energy data improves tissue characterization and material differentiation, allowing virtual non‑contrast images, better iodine/contrast detection, and identification of stone or gout composition. It can reduce artifact and refine diagnosis in vascular, abdominal, and musculoskeletal conditions. Radiation exposure is similar to standard CT and is clinically justified.

A triple-phase CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis is a contrast-enhanced CT performed in three timed stages—unenhanced, arterial (early after IV contrast), and portal-venous (later)—to show organ enhancement patterns. It helps detect and characterize liver lesions, tumors, vascular abnormalities, trauma, and active bleeding. The exam uses iodinated contrast and radiation; risks include contrast reactions and kidney effects.

Dual-energy CT acquires images at two different X‑ray energy levels, enabling material separation and better tissue characterization—e.g., iodine mapping, virtual non‑contrast images, and reduced beam‑hardening artifacts. Conventional (single‑energy) CT uses one energy spectrum, providing anatomical detail but limited material discrimination. Dual‑energy improves lesion detection, quantifies contrast, and offers advanced post‑processing; radiation dose is comparable with modern optimized scanners.

An abdominal CT can detect primary and metastatic tumors in the liver (including metastases and hepatocellular carcinoma), pancreas, kidneys (renal cell carcinoma and urothelial cancers), adrenals, spleen, ovaries, stomach and colon, as well as abdominal and retroperitoneal lymphomas and peritoneal metastases. It helps stage disease, guide biopsy, and monitor treatment response, though very small or early lesions may be missed and further tests are sometimes needed.
