Oral contrast delineates stomach and bowel lumen; IV contrast highlights vascular structures, organ parenchyma and lesions. Together they improve detection of bowel obstruction, perforation, inflammation, infection, abscess, tumors, organ injury and vascular abnormalities, and help stage disease or guide interventions.

A CT abdomen and pelvis with oral and IV contrast typically requires drinking oral contrast 30–90 minutes beforehand so it coats the bowel. The scan itself takes about 5–15 minutes; IV injection and brief monitoring add roughly 10–20 minutes. You can feel sick after a CT scan with contrast. Mild, common reactions include nausea, vomiting, a warm sensation, metallic taste, itching or hives; they usually start immediately and resolve quickly. Serious allergic reactions (breathing difficulty, swelling, dizziness) are rare but urgent. People with kidney problems may be at higher risk of complications. Report any symptoms to medical staff promptly.
