Comprehensive Hormones

A comprehensive hormone test is a multi-panel assessment measuring key hormones—thyroid (TSH, free T4/T3), sex hormones (estradiol, progesterone, total/free testosterone, SHBG), pituitary (LH, FSH, prolactin), adrenal (cortisol, DHEA‑S), and metabolic markers (insulin). Tests use blood, saliva, or urine and are tailored by age, sex and symptoms to diagnose causes of fatigue, menstrual/fertility issues, mood, libido, or weight changes.

Hormones are commonly classified by chemical structure: steroid hormones (lipid‑soluble, derived from cholesterol, e.g., cortisol and sex steroids); peptide/protein hormones (amino‑acid chains, e.g., insulin and growth hormone); amine hormones (single‑amino‑acid–derived, e.g., thyroid hormones and catecholamines); and eicosanoids or other lipid‑derived local mediators (e.g., prostaglandins). Each type differs in solubility, receptor location, and mechanism of action.

A dried urine test for comprehensive hormones collects multiple small urine samples on filter paper across the day, which are dried and mailed to a lab. It measures steroid hormones and metabolites (cortisol, estrogens, progesterone, testosterone) and diurnal patterns, offering convenient, stable transport and metabolite profiling. Results aid endocrine assessment but require clinical correlation, as some hormones are better assessed by blood or saliva.

The four "good" hormones often cited are dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins. Dopamine drives motivation and reward; serotonin stabilizes mood, sleep, and appetite; oxytocin supports bonding, trust, and social connection; endorphins act as natural painkillers and create euphoria. Healthy habits—exercise, sleep, social contact, and a balanced diet—help regulate these hormones.

Signs of hormonal imbalance include persistent fatigue, unexplained weight gain or loss, mood swings, anxiety or depression, irregular or missed periods, low libido, hair thinning or excessive growth, acne, sleep disturbances, hot flashes or night sweats, cold intolerance, constipation, and brain fog. If symptoms persist, see a clinician; simple blood or urine tests (thyroid, sex hormones, cortisol) can identify common imbalances.

Hormone test costs vary by country, test type and whether insurance covers them. In the US, single hormone blood tests typically cost about $50–$300 (panels or specialty tests $200–$1,000). In the UK, NHS testing is usually free when clinically ordered; private tests often cost £20–£150. In India, private lab charges are roughly ₹300–₹2,000.
