Cladosporium herbarum allergy is an immune reaction to spores of the common mold Cladosporium herbarum. Exposure can trigger allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis or asthma exacerbations, producing sneezing, runny or blocked nose, itchy eyes, cough and wheeze. Diagnosis uses skin-prick or specific IgE tests. Management includes reducing mold exposure, antihistamines, intranasal corticosteroids and, for persistent cases, allergen immunotherapy or asthma treatments as needed.

Cladosporium herbarum commonly contaminates fruits (berries, apples), vegetables, cereals and grains, nuts, bread and baked goods, soft cheeses and dry‑cured meats, and spoiled refrigerated produce. It grows on plant surfaces and decaying organic matter and can cause visible spoilage and allergic respiratory reactions in sensitive people, though it’s usually a surface contaminant rather than an invasive foodborne pathogen.

Eliminate Cladosporium herbarum by fixing moisture sources (leaks, condensation), drying thoroughly, and improving ventilation/dehumidification. Clean hard surfaces with detergent and water, then disinfect with diluted bleach (about 1:10–1:16) or a fungicide; discard heavily contaminated porous materials (carpet, drywall). Use gloves, eye protection and an appropriate respirator (N95/FFP2). For extensive growth or if immunocompromised, hire professional remediation.

Cladosporium is not usually classified as a highly toxic "black mold." It’s a common environmental mold that mainly causes allergic reactions, asthma exacerbations, sinus and respiratory irritation. Some species can rarely cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised people. Although not typically producing severe mycotoxins, large indoor growth should be cleaned or remediated to protect health and reduce allergy risk.

Cladosporium primarily causes allergic respiratory illnesses such as allergic rhinitis, asthma exacerbations, allergic fungal sinusitis and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. It can also trigger skin and nail infections and, rarely in immunocompromised people, cause opportunistic cutaneous or subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis and invasive disease. It is mainly an environmental mold acting as an allergen; invasive infections are uncommon.

Mold allergy usually persists but symptoms can be greatly reduced. Some people—particularly children—may outgrow specific allergies, while adults often remain sensitized. Avoidance, medications (antihistamines, nasal steroids) and allergen immunotherapy can control or significantly lessen reactions; immunotherapy may induce long-term tolerance for some.
