A CECT (contrast-enhanced CT) of the abdomen and pelvis is a computed tomography exam using intravenous contrast dye to improve visualization of abdominal organs, blood vessels and soft tissues. It helps detect infections, inflammation, tumours, trauma, bleeding and vascular problems, and guides staging or treatment. Preparation may include fasting and kidney-function checks; risks include contrast allergy and radiation exposure.

A contrast-enhanced CT of the abdomen and pelvis visualizes abdominal organs (liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, adrenals), bowel, bladder and reproductive organs, plus major blood vessels and lymph nodes. It detects masses or tumors, inflammation, infection or abscess, kidney or gallstones, trauma, free fluid or air, and vascular problems (bleeds, aneurysms, ischemia). Contrast improves organ definition and blood-flow/tumor enhancement.

Fasting is usually advised before an abdominal CECT: typically fast 4–6 hours from solid food; clear fluids are often allowed until two hours before. This reduces nausea/aspiration risk and can improve image quality. In emergencies the scan may proceed without fasting. If you take metformin or have kidney problems, follow your facility’s instructions about withholding it and checking renal function before restarting.

Costs vary by country, facility, insurance and whether contrast is used. In the United States a CT abdomen/pelvis typically ranges roughly $500–3,000 out‑of‑pocket; Medicare/private-insurance negotiated prices are often lower. In India typical prices are about ₹1,500–12,000. In the UK it's free on the NHS; private scans usually cost about £200–£700. Always check with your provider for exact pricing.

A contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) scan is generally not painful. Lying on the table or IV insertion for the contrast may cause brief discomfort, and the injected contrast can produce a warm flush, metallic taste, or mild nausea for seconds. Rarely, allergic reactions or kidney-related effects occur. The scan itself is quick and non-invasive, though anxiety or claustrophobia may cause distress.

Generally you may drink clear fluids, including water, up to two hours before an abdominal CECT; fasting from solid food for 4–6 hours is usually advised. If your scan requires oral contrast, follow the timing instructions given. Also notify the imaging team about kidney disease, diabetes, or medications (e.g., metformin), because additional precautions may be needed.
