Oral contrast for CECT is a drinkable agent that opacifies the gastrointestinal tract to improve bowel visualization. Common options include neutral agents (water, polyethylene glycol, methylcellulose), positive water‑soluble iodinated agents (diluted diatrizoate/Gastrografin) or barium suspensions. Typical volumes are 500–1500 mL given 30–90 minutes before scanning; choice depends on indication, perforation risk, and renal status.

A contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) of the abdomen is used to evaluate abdominal organs and blood vessels, helping diagnose causes of pain, trauma, infection, inflammation, abscesses, tumors and metastatic disease. It detects bowel obstruction, vascular problems and organ injury, stages cancer, and guides biopsies or surgical planning. Intravenous contrast improves visualization of blood flow and lesion enhancement.

Fasting is usually recommended before a contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) abdomen. Patients are typically asked to avoid solid food for 4 to 6 hours; clear fluids may be allowed until two hours before the scan. If oral contrast is required, follow specific timing instructions. Diabetics or those on medications should get tailored guidance from the imaging centre.

Intravenous (IV) contrast is generally superior for abdominal CT when evaluating solid organs, vessels, inflammation, infection, tumors and active bleeding because it enhances tissue vascularity. Oral contrast mainly opacifies the bowel lumen to distinguish bowel from adjacent structures and helps detect leaks or small‑bowel disease. Choice depends on the clinical question; sometimes both are used. Kidney function and allergy affect contrast use.

A contrast-enhanced CT scan (CECT) is generally not painful. Lying on the table is usually comfortable, though staying still can cause mild discomfort. The IV for contrast may cause a brief pinch; the injected contrast often produces a warm flushing sensation, metallic taste, or brief nausea. Serious pain or severe allergic reactions are rare—tell staff about allergies or kidney problems beforehand.

Usually you may sip clear water after taking oral contrast, but follow the imaging center’s instructions. Avoid other drinks (tea, milk, juice) and solid food until the scan, and don’t overhydrate so the contrast isn’t diluted. If you vomit, have swallowing problems, are pregnant, or received different prep, contact the radiology team for guidance.
