Brucella IgM Antibody

A positive Brucella IgM indicates a recent or acute Brucella infection, since IgM is the early antibody response. It supports clinical suspicion but can give false positives or persist for weeks, so results are interpreted with symptoms, exposure history and confirmatory tests (blood culture, PCR or rising IgG titres). Medical evaluation and prompt treatment are recommended.

Brucella antibodies are immune proteins produced in response to Brucella bacteria. Detection (IgM, IgG) aids diagnosis of brucellosis: IgM rises early, IgG indicates past or ongoing infection. Serologic tests (agglutination, ELISA) help confirm exposure or disease, but cross‑reactivity and persistent antibodies can complicate interpretation. Diagnosis should combine serology with clinical signs and, when possible, culture or PCR.

A positive IgM suggests a recent or acute infection—your immune system is mounting an early response. It can also be a false positive from cross-reactivity or test issues. Confirm with repeat testing, IgG serology and/or PCR, and correlate with symptoms and exposure. Brucella infection (brucellosis) commonly causes fever—often undulating—night sweats, fatigue, malaise, loss of appetite and weight, headache, muscle and joint pain, and back pain. Patients may have swollen lymph nodes, enlarged liver or spleen, and prolonged or relapsing symptoms. Complications can include osteoarticular disease (sacroiliitis, spondylitis), endocarditis, and neurologic involvement in chronic or severe cases.

If Brucella infection is untreated it can become chronic with relapsing fever, sweats, fatigue and weight loss. Serious complications include osteoarticular disease (arthritis, spondylitis), endocarditis (the leading cause of death), neurobrucellosis (meningitis, encephalitis), orchitis/epididymitis, hepatosplenomegaly and abscesses. Untreated disease risks prolonged disability, relapse and, in severe cases, life‑threatening organ involvement.

Brucellosis is caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella — small, Gram‑negative, non‑motile coccobacilli. Human infections most commonly involve Brucella melitensis (goats and sheep), B. abortus (cattle), B. suis (swine) and B. canis (dogs). Transmission occurs via unpasteurized dairy, direct contact with infected animals, or inhalation of contaminated aerosols; it causes fever, sweats, malaise, and can become chronic.
