Brucella IgG Antibody

Brucella IgG positive indicates your immune system has produced long‑lasting antibodies against Brucella bacteria, consistent with prior exposure or past infection. It can also occur in chronic or resolving brucellosis. Interpretation requires clinical correlation, symptom review and other tests (IgM, rising titers, culture or PCR) to distinguish active versus past disease. Brucella antibodies are immune proteins produced when the body encounters Brucella bacteria, the cause of brucellosis. Serologic tests (e.g., ELISA, agglutination) detect IgM (early/acute) and IgG (later/persistent) antibodies to diagnose current or past infection. Positive results require clinical correlation because antibodies can persist after treatment and cross-react with other bacteria; definitive diagnosis may need culture or PCR.

A positive Brucella test means you likely have brucellosis, a bacterial zoonosis that requires prompt treatment with a prolonged combination antibiotic regimen (typically doxycycline plus rifampicin or an aminoglycoside). Severe or complicated cases (endocarditis, osteoarticular or neurobrucellosis) may need hospitalization and specialist care. Avoid unpasteurized dairy, notify occupational/public‑health contacts, and ensure close follow‑up to monitor response and prevent relapse; pregnancy needs alternative regimens.

A positive IgG antibody test shows your immune system has previously encountered the pathogen or vaccine and mounted a longer‑term antibody response. IgG usually appears weeks after exposure and can persist for months or longer, often indicating some degree of protection, but it does not prove current infection nor guarantee complete or lasting immunity. Antibody levels and neutralizing ability vary between individuals.

Brucellosis is a potentially serious bacterial infection transmitted from animals. It can cause fever, sweats, fatigue, joint and muscle pain, and may become chronic. Complications include arthritis, endocarditis and nervous-system involvement, which can lead to long-term disability; fatalities are uncommon but possible. Effective diagnosis and prolonged antibiotic treatment usually cure it, and early therapy reduces complications.

Brucellosis is caused by Brucella species — small, Gram-negative, nonmotile coccobacilli. Major human pathogens are B. melitensis (sheep/goats; most virulent), B. abortus (cattle), B. suis (pigs) and B. canis (dogs). Infection occurs through contact with infected animals, ingestion of unpasteurized dairy or inhalation of contaminated aerosols; it causes fever, sweats, malaise and can become chronic if untreated.
