A "sensitive" result means the bug is likely to be controlled by standard doses of that antibiotic; "intermediate" suggests possible effect at higher doses; "resistant" means the drug is unlikely to work. Sensitivity testing (often reporting MICs) guides clinicians to choose or adjust antibiotic therapy.

Blood cultures detect bloodstream infections—bacteremia and fungemia—and identify organisms causing sepsis. They help diagnose infective endocarditis, catheter-related bloodstream infection, candidemia, and septic arthritis or osteomyelitis when bacteria spread to bone/joints. They also reveal bacteremia secondary to pneumonia, urinary tract or intra-abdominal infections and guide targeted antibiotic or antifungal therapy.

Clinicians confirm the organism and antibiotic susceptibility, start or adjust targeted IV antimicrobial therapy, often hospitalize, obtain repeat cultures, and search for and treat the infection source (e.g., remove infected lines, drain abscesses). Patients are closely monitored for sepsis and organ dysfunction; treatment duration depends on organism and response.

High sensitivity means a diagnostic test correctly identifies most people who have the condition — it has a high true‑positive rate and few false negatives. A highly sensitive test is valuable for screening and for ruling out disease when the result is negative (SNOUT). However, greater sensitivity can come at the expense of specificity, yielding more false positives.
