A bilateral carotid Doppler is a noninvasive ultrasound exam that evaluates blood flow in both left and right carotid arteries in the neck. It uses Doppler and color imaging to detect plaque, narrowing (stenosis), and altered flow velocities that increase stroke risk. The painless test uses a transducer on the skin and helps guide treatment decisions and monitoring of vascular disease.

Warning signs of a blocked carotid artery include sudden weakness, numbness or paralysis on one side of the body (face, arm, leg); sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech; sudden vision loss or blurring in one or both eyes; dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; and a sudden, severe headache with no known cause. Brief, transient episodes (TIAs) are also red flags. Seek immediate medical attention.
