Apergillus Fumigatus

Aspergillus fumigatus causes aspergillosis, a range of conditions: allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (in asthma or cystic fibrosis), chronic pulmonary aspergillosis and aspergilloma (fungus ball in lung cavities), invasive aspergillosis (life‑threatening in immunocompromised people), and sinus or skin infections. Symptoms and severity vary with immune status; diagnosis uses imaging, cultures and biomarkers; treatment includes antifungal drugs and sometimes surgery.

Aspergillus fumigatus is an environmental mold that can contaminate stored and decaying plant-based foods. It’s commonly found on cereals and grains, nuts (including peanuts), spices, dried fruits, and bread or other stored baked goods, especially if damp or poorly stored. It also thrives in compost, soil and decaying vegetation, increasing contamination risk during harvest or storage.

Treatment depends on disease type. For invasive Aspergillus fumigatus, voriconazole is first-line; isavuconazole or liposomal amphotericin B are alternatives, with echinocandins used in combination or salvage. Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis is treated with oral corticosteroids ± itraconazole. Simple aspergilloma may need surgical resection or observation. Management should include antifungal susceptibility testing and specialist input.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a common environmental mold found worldwide in soil, compost, decaying vegetation, leaf litter, stored grain and other organic debris. It also occurs in dust, indoor air, HVAC systems, damp or water‑damaged buildings and on building materials. Spores are airborne and abundant in composting or agricultural settings; they can infect mainly people with weakened immune systems.

Early signs of aspergillosis can include persistent cough (sometimes with blood), wheezing or worsening asthma, shortness of breath, fever, chest pain and fatigue. Sinus symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain or discharge may occur. Allergic forms often cause increased asthma attacks, cough and mucus; invasive disease can progress rapidly, so seek prompt medical evaluation.

Aspergillus is not TB. It’s a genus of fungi that can cause aspergillosis, a range of lung diseases—sometimes mimicking tuberculosis clinically and on imaging. Aspergillus often colonizes pre-existing lung cavities (including those from prior TB). Causes, diagnosis and treatment differ: fungal infection treated with antifungals, whereas tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and treated with specific antibiotics.
