A positive ANA test alone usually isn’t an immediate cause for alarm. Many healthy people have low-titer ANA; clinical context, symptoms, antibody titers and patterns matter. If you have joint pain, rashes, unexplained fatigue or organ symptoms, or high-titer/specific autoantibodies, further evaluation and a rheumatology referral are recommended. Your doctor will interpret results and advise follow-up testing.

The ANA IgG/IgM test detects antinuclear antibodies of the IgG and IgM classes in blood. It’s used to screen for autoimmune conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren’s syndrome and other connective tissue diseases. Results include titer and staining pattern; a positive result prompts further specific antibody tests and clinical correlation, since low-level ANA can be found in healthy people.

A normal antinuclear antibody (ANA) result is negative, usually reported as a titer below the laboratory cutoff—commonly less than 1:40 (some labs use <1:80). ANA results are given as titers and patterns; low‑level positive titers can occur in healthy people, especially older adults. Clinical symptoms and other tests determine significance, so results should be interpreted by a clinician.

Antinuclear antibody (ANA) positivity most often indicates autoimmune connective-tissue diseases, especially systemic lupus erythematosus. It is also seen in Sjögren’s syndrome, systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), mixed connective tissue disease, polymyositis/dermatomyositis, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune hepatitis and drug‑induced lupus. ANA is not disease-specific and can be positive in healthy people, infections, and other conditions, so clinical correlation and further testing are required.

Positive ANA can be seen with certain cancers, especially hematologic malignancies (leukemia, Hodgkin and non‑Hodgkin lymphoma) and some solid tumors such as ovarian, lung, breast, colon and liver cancers. ANA positivity may reflect paraneoplastic autoimmunity or immune dysregulation; it is non‑specific and must be interpreted with clinical context and further diagnostic work‑up.

Early signs of lupus in females include persistent fatigue, unexplained fever, and joint pain or swelling (especially small joints). A butterfly-shaped rash across the cheeks and nose, increased sensitivity to sunlight, and hair loss are common. Other early signs: mouth or nose ulcers, Raynaud’s phenomenon (cold, discolored fingers/toes), chest pain with breathing, and unexplained blood test abnormalities such as anemia.
