Anti ds-DNA Antibody

A positive anti-dsDNA test means antibodies against double-stranded DNA are present, most commonly indicating systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It’s relatively specific for SLE and can track disease activity, especially kidney involvement (lupus nephritis). Results must be interpreted with symptoms and other tests (complement levels, urine analysis). Low-level positives can occur with infections or other autoimmune conditions, so follow-up is advised.

Anti–double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) antibodies are most strongly associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), especially active disease and lupus nephritis (renal involvement). They are highly specific for SLE and uncommon in other conditions; rarely they may appear in other autoimmune disorders but are not characteristic of drug-induced lupus (where anti‑histone antibodies predominate).

Detection of anti-dsDNA antibodies strongly supports a diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), as they are relatively specific and often correlate with disease activity and kidney involvement. However, a positive dsDNA test alone does not definitively confirm lupus; diagnosis requires compatible clinical features and other laboratory findings (e.g., ANA, complement levels). Negative results don’t fully exclude SLE either.

Early signs of lupus in females often include persistent fatigue, unexplained low-grade fever, joint pain and swelling, and a characteristic butterfly rash across the cheeks and nose. Other early features may include photosensitivity, hair thinning or loss, painless mouth or nose ulcers, Raynaud’s phenomenon (fingers turning white/blue in cold), and chest pain with deep breaths. Cognitive fog or memory problems can also occur.

Chickenpox (varicella) is caused by varicella‑zoster virus (VZV), a double‑stranded DNA virus of the Herpesviridae family. Primary infection causes a vesicular rash and systemic symptoms; viral latency in sensory ganglia can later reactivate as shingles (herpes zoster), a painful, localized vesicular eruption.
