Echinococcus IgG (hydatid) serology is a blood test that detects IgG antibodies against Echinococcus species to support diagnosis of hydatid (echinococcal) cyst disease. It indicates exposure or immune response, helps confirm imaging findings, and can monitor treatment. Sensitivity and specificity vary by cyst location and stage; false negatives and cross‑reactive false positives can occur, so results are interpreted with clinical and imaging data.

Confirming amoebiasis requires laboratory testing and, if needed, imaging. For intestinal infection, obtain multiple stool exams (microscopy for cysts/trophozoites) plus stool antigen testing or PCR to identify Entamoeba histolytica. For suspected liver or extraintestinal disease, use serology and ultrasound/CT; aspirated pus can be tested by PCR. Differentiate E. histolytica from nonpathogenic species to guide treatment.

The gold standard for diagnosing amoebiasis is molecular detection of Entamoeba histolytica DNA (PCR) from stool or tissue, since it reliably differentiates pathogenic E. histolytica from nonpathogenic Entamoeba dispar and offers high sensitivity and specificity. Stool antigen tests are commonly used clinically; serology, imaging, and aspiration help diagnose and manage extraintestinal disease such as liver abscess.

Early signs of intestinal amoeba infection (amoebiasis) often start days to weeks after exposure and include loose or watery stools, abdominal cramps, bloating, urgency and nausea. Low‑grade fever and passage of mucus or blood in stool suggest invasive disease. Many infections remain mild or asymptomatic. Seek medical care if diarrhea is severe, persistent, bloody, or accompanied by high fever, dehydration, or severe abdominal pain.

A positive serology test means antibodies to the pathogen were detected in the blood, indicating past infection or vaccination and that the immune system mounted a response. It does not confirm current infection—PCR or antigen tests assess that—and antibody presence doesn’t guarantee protective immunity or its duration. Interpretation depends on antibody type (IgM suggests recent exposure; IgG indicates prior or longer-term response) and clinical context.
