AFB Rapid Culture (BD BACTEC MGIT)

A MGIT culture (Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube) is a liquid culture system used to detect and grow Mycobacterium tuberculosis from clinical specimens. Tubes contain enriched broth and an oxygen‑quenched fluorescent sensor; automated incubators detect increased fluorescence as bacteria consume oxygen. MGIT is more sensitive and faster than solid media and is used for diagnosis and drug‑susceptibility testing, though results can still take days to weeks.

An AFB culture tests for acid-fast bacilli—mainly Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other mycobacteria—by growing organisms from clinical specimens (sputum, tissue, fluids). It confirms active tuberculosis or nontuberculous mycobacterial infection, enables species identification and drug-susceptibility testing, and guides treatment. Cultures are more sensitive than smears but take several weeks for results.

They are related but not identical. "BACTEC" is a brand name for automated mycobacterial culture systems (historically including a radiometric method), while MGIT (Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube) is a non‑radiometric, fluorescence‑based tube system used in automated instruments (e.g., MGIT 960). MGIT replaced older radiometric BACTEC methods, offering faster, safer detection and is widely used today.
