Finger MRI provides high-resolution images of bones, joints, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves and soft tissues. It detects fractures, bone marrow edema, tendon or ligament tears, synovitis, arthritis, infections (osteomyelitis), cysts, tumors and postoperative changes. MRI also identifies soft-tissue masses, inflammation and occult injuries not visible on X-ray, helping guide diagnosis and treatment planning.

A 3T MRI uses a 3-tesla magnetic field—twice the strength of standard 1.5T scanners—giving higher signal-to-noise for sharper images or faster scans. It’s ideal for detailed brain, spine, joint and vascular imaging and advanced techniques (fMRI, spectroscopy). Drawbacks include louder noise, increased heating and artifact potential, and stricter implant/metal safety considerations than lower-field MRI.

A 3T MRI scan typically takes 15–60 minutes of imaging time; most routine exams (e.g., brain, knee) are completed in 20–45 minutes. Adding contrast, extra sequences, or complex studies can extend imaging to 60+ minutes. Including check‑in, safety screening, positioning and post‑scan time, expect a total appointment of about 30–90 minutes depending on the study and cooperation.

MRI can visualize trigger finger-related changes — thickening of the flexor tendon, A1 pulley, tendon nodules and tenosynovitis — but it's not usually required. High-resolution ultrasound is faster and more cost-effective for confirming pulley or tendon abnormalities. MRI is reserved for atypical cases, persistent symptoms, or to exclude other causes in unclear presentations.

MRI can detect many bone problems by imaging bone marrow and surrounding soft tissues—bone bruises, marrow edema, infections (osteomyelitis), tumors and early stress fractures. However, MRI is less sensitive for fine cortical detail and some acute cortical fractures; X‑ray or CT may be preferred to assess the bone cortex or confirm fractures. Clinical interpretation and targeted imaging are often needed.
