3D Ultrasound Eyes

3D ultrasound has no proven harmful effects when used medically, but potential risks include small theoretical thermal and mechanical (cavitation) effects from prolonged exposure. Unregulated “keepsake” scans and repeated or unnecessary imaging may increase exposure. Poor operator skill or non‑diagnostic use can lead to misinterpretation, false reassurance, or unnecessary anxiety. Use only when medically indicated and performed by trained professionals.

3D ultrasound provides detailed surface and structural images to detect fetal facial clefts, limb or skeletal abnormalities, certain neural tube and cardiac defects, placental location and morphology, multiple pregnancies, and uterine or ovarian masses. It helps clarify anomalies seen on 2D scans and guides surgical planning, but cannot diagnose genetic conditions and may miss subtle internal issues—further testing may be needed.

The best time for a non-diagnostic 3D ultrasound to capture clear fetal facial features and movements is usually between 26 and 32 weeks’ gestation. Earlier scans (around 15–20 weeks) may show basic anatomy; after about 32–34 weeks images can be less clear due to reduced amniotic fluid and fetal position. A 3D ultrasound is typically performed between 26 and 32 weeks’ gestation, with an optimal window around 28–32 weeks when fetal fat and amniotic fluid produce clearer facial detail. Doctors usually rely on 2D instead of 3D ultrasound because 2D provides the needed diagnostic information, is faster, cheaper, widely available and easier to use. 3D requires special equipment and training, takes longer, and often adds little clinical benefit except for specific cases (e.g., facial or structural fetal anomalies), so it’s used as an adjunct rather than routinely.

Most elective 3D (and 4D) ultrasound sessions last about 20–45 minutes; routine diagnostic scans are often shorter (15–30 minutes). Time varies with fetal position, maternal body habitus and whether multiple images/videos are captured. The scan produces digital images and video that can be stored, printed or transferred—so the images last indefinitely as files or prints, though quality depends on capture.
