A PCR test for Zika detects the virus’s genetic material (RNA) using reverse-transcription PCR to identify active infection. It is most useful during the acute phase—usually within the first week in blood and for a longer period in urine—and can confirm recent infection, especially important in pregnancy. Samples commonly tested include blood and urine; testing is highly specific but limited by a narrow detection window.

Zika testing uses molecular and antibody methods. RT‑PCR detects viral RNA in blood (usually during the first week of symptoms) and in urine (up to about two weeks). Serologic tests detect Zika IgM from around day 4 onward but may cross‑react with other flaviviruses; plaque reduction neutralization tests (PRNT) help confirm results. Cerebrospinal fluid or placental testing may be done in congenital or neurological cases.

A PCR test detects the genetic material of a specific virus—RNA for RNA viruses or DNA for DNA viruses—by amplifying target sequences. It’s widely used to identify SARS‑CoV‑2 (COVID‑19) but can also detect influenza viruses, HIV, hepatitis viruses and many others. A positive result indicates current infection.

Zika has no specific antiviral treatment; care is supportive. Manage symptoms with rest, fluids and acetaminophen for fever and pain; avoid NSAIDs until dengue is excluded. Monitor for complications and seek medical care if symptoms worsen. Pregnant women should get prompt evaluation and specialized prenatal monitoring. Prevent spread by avoiding mosquito bites and practicing safer sex to reduce sexual transmission.

A PCR test in gynecology is a molecular assay that detects genetic material (DNA or RNA) of infections from cervical, vaginal, urine or swab samples. It identifies organisms such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, HPV and trichomonas with high sensitivity and specificity, enabling early diagnosis and targeted treatment. Results usually take hours to days and may prompt partner notification and follow-up testing.
