Urea in urine is a normal waste product of protein metabolism removed by the kidneys. Its presence usually indicates normal kidney filtration and protein breakdown. Abnormally high urine urea can reflect high protein intake, dehydration or increased catabolism; unusually low urine urea may suggest reduced kidney function, low protein intake, liver disease or excessive hydration. Lab interpretation depends on context and other tests.

Normal 24‑hour urinary urea excretion is typically about 12–20 g urea‑nitrogen per day, which corresponds to roughly 26–43 g of urea per day. Spot urine urea concentrations vary with fluid intake and are interpreted alongside urine volume and creatinine. If results are outside this range, clinicians may assess diet, hydration, kidney function, or repeat testing.

Urea rises in urine when protein breakdown increases or protein intake is high. Common causes include high‑protein diets, fasting or severe catabolism (fever, trauma, infection), dehydration, uncontrolled diabetes, and some medications that boost protein breakdown. Kidney handling also matters—changes in renal perfusion or tubular function can alter urea excretion. Persistent abnormal values warrant medical evaluation.

An urea test measures urea (a nitrogen waste product) in blood or urine to assess kidney function and protein metabolism during pregnancy. It helps detect dehydration, impaired renal function or complications such as pre‑eclampsia, and is used to monitor high‑risk pregnancies or medication effects. It’s usually done alongside creatinine and electrolytes; abnormal results prompt further evaluation and management.

High blood urea may indicate reduced kidney function, dehydration, heart failure, or high protein intake. Mild elevations can be reversible with hydration or treating the cause, but very high levels suggest significant kidney impairment or failure and can lead to uremia, electrolyte imbalances, fluid overload, and altered mental status. Severity depends on level and cause—prompt medical evaluation and treatment are essential.

To lower urea in urine, drink enough water, reduce high-protein and processed-food intake, and favor plant-based proteins. Control underlying conditions (kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension) with prescribed treatments, avoid nephrotoxic drugs (NSAIDs) when possible, and limit salt and alcohol. Maintain a healthy weight, monitor labs regularly, and follow your clinician’s advice—many causes improve with diet and medical management.
