A stress echocardiogram begins with a baseline heart ultrasound and monitoring setup (ECG, blood pressure, sometimes IV). The patient then exercises on a treadmill or bike — or receives a pharmacologic agent if unable to exercise — while vitals are watched. At peak stress repeat echocardiographic images are taken to compare wall motion and pumping function. The test lasts about 30–60 minutes and is supervised for safety.

A stress test can indicate reduced blood flow to the heart during exertion, suggesting one or more coronary blockages, but it does not directly visualize arteries or precisely measure blockage severity. Different stress modalities (ECG, stress echo, nuclear) vary in accuracy. Positive results usually prompt CT coronary angiography or invasive coronary angiography for definitive diagnosis and anatomical detail.

A stress test (exercise ECG) records heart rhythm and electrical changes during exertion to detect ischemia and assess exercise capacity. A stress echocardiogram combines exercise or pharmacologic stress with ultrasound imaging, showing real-time heart wall motion, valve function and pumping performance. Stress echo is more sensitive for regional ischemia and structural problems; the standard stress ECG is simpler, cheaper and widely used.

A positive stress echocardiogram suggests inducible myocardial ischemia or reduced heart muscle function under stress. It prompts further evaluation—often coronary angiography—to define blockages, risk stratification, and tailored treatment. Management may include intensified medications (antiplatelet, statin, beta‑blocker), lifestyle changes, and revascularization (angioplasty or bypass) if significant disease exists. Follow‑up imaging and cardiac rehabilitation are commonly recommended.

A stress echocardiogram is generally not painful. It uses ultrasound images at rest and during exercise (or with medications that mimic exercise). You may feel temporary chest pressure, breathlessness, palpitations, or fatigue during exertion or from drugs; electrode patches can itch and the probe may press on the chest. Serious complications are rare and staff closely monitor you.

Yes. Anxiety raises heart rate, blood pressure and sympathetic tone, can cause chest pain or palpitations, and may alter cardiac wall motion during a stress echocardiogram. This can produce false‑positive results or make it hard to reach/maintain target stress. Inform the staff—calming techniques, medication adjustments, or pharmacologic stress alternatives can improve test accuracy.
