Eptoin (phenytoin) is an antiepileptic used to control generalized tonic–clonic (grand mal) and complex partial seizures. It’s also used to prevent and treat seizures after head injury or brain surgery and, in emergency settings, for status epilepticus (IV form). Dosing is individualized; periodic blood-level checks and monitoring for side effects (drowsiness, gum overgrowth, rash) are important.

Eptoin (phenytoin) onset depends on route. IV phenytoin usually begins to act within minutes (often 5–30 minutes) after a loading dose. Oral tablets are absorbed more slowly — initial effects may be seen within a few hours, but steady therapeutic levels and full seizure control can take days to a week or more unless a loading dose is used. Response varies by dose, blood levels, and individual factors.

The major side effect of phenytoin is gingival hyperplasia — overgrowth of gum tissue that can cause swollen, tender, bleeding gums and worsen oral hygiene, especially with long-term use. Other important adverse effects include dizziness, nystagmus, ataxia, rash, blood count abnormalities and liver toxicity, so regular dental checks, blood tests and liver monitoring are recommended.
