Normal facial nerve conduction values: distal motor latency ≈2–4 ms (stimulus at stylomastoid foramen to orbicularis oculi/nasalis), CMAP amplitude typically ≥1 mV (commonly 1–8 mV), and conduction velocity >60 m/s. Side-to-side latency difference should be <1 ms and amplitude difference usually <20–30%. Marked latency prolongation or amplitude drop (>50%) indicates pathology.

Check facial nerve function by comparing both sides: ask the person to raise eyebrows, close eyes tightly, smile showing teeth, puff out cheeks and whistle. Note asymmetry, drooping, altered taste, hyperacusis, numbness or pain. Sudden onset, inability to close an eye, or accompanying limb weakness/slurred speech needs emergency care.
