MRI Scan Venography, in Visit Clinic

Magnetic resonance venography (MRV) is a noninvasive imaging technique that uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency pulses to produce detailed images of veins. It can be done with or without intravenous contrast to assess vein patency, blood flow, thrombus, or venous malformations in the brain, neck, chest, abdomen, or limbs. MRV avoids ionizing radiation but may be limited by implants or severe kidney disease.

Venography can cause mild to moderate discomfort: the needle and contrast injection often produce brief stinging, warmth or a pressurey/cramping sensation in the limb. A tourniquet and dye injection may add short-lived pain, and local anaesthetic is usually used to reduce it. Most people report only temporary soreness or bruising afterwards; serious pain or complications are uncommon.

MR venography is generally safe but carries some risks: allergic reactions to gadolinium contrast (rare), nephrogenic systemic fibrosis in people with severe kidney failure, claustrophobia or anxiety during the scan, discomfort from lying still, and IV-site bruising or infection. Metallic implants may be contraindications and image artifacts can lead to misinterpretation. Pregnancy and severe renal impairment need special consideration.

An MRI venogram usually takes about 20–60 minutes for imaging, depending on the body area, complexity, and whether contrast is used. Allow extra time for registration, positioning and IV placement—typically the whole appointment lasts 45–90 minutes. Claustrophobia, breathing instructions or additional sequences may extend the scan time; follow any facility-specific prep instructions.

Venography is performed to visualize the veins and identify problems such as deep vein thrombosis, vein obstruction or narrowing, and venous reflux. It helps map venous anatomy before surgeries or procedures, guides catheter-directed treatments (thrombolysis, stenting), and evaluates unexplained leg swelling or varicose veins when noninvasive imaging is inconclusive. The test informs diagnosis and treatment planning for venous disease.

MRV scan reports are usually available within 24–72 hours. If the study is urgent (emergency or inpatient), the radiologist can provide preliminary findings the same day or within a few hours. Routine outpatient reports may take several days; some centres issue final reports within a week. Your referring clinician will receive and discuss results, and you can request a copy from the imaging department.
