MRI Scan Upper Abdomen with Urography, in Visit Clinic

MRI of the upper abdomen visualizes the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, pancreas, spleen, adrenal glands, upper kidneys and major vessels. It detects focal lesions (tumors, cysts, hemangiomas), inflammation, abscesses, biliary obstruction, stones (with MRCP), fat or iron deposition, and vascular abnormalities. Contrast-enhanced and diffusion sequences help characterize lesions and assess tumor extent, vascular involvement, and chronic liver disease.

MRI urography is a noninvasive imaging test that uses magnetic resonance to produce detailed pictures of the kidneys, ureters and bladder. It combines heavily T2-weighted and contrast-enhanced sequences to assess urinary tract anatomy and function, detecting obstruction, stones, tumors and congenital abnormalities. It avoids ionizing radiation and is useful when CT is contraindicated, though limited by motion, metal implants or renal impairment.

An abdominal MRI commonly images organs from the diaphragm through much of the abdomen, but the bladder—located in the pelvis—is not always fully included. Some abdominal MRI protocols extend into the pelvis and will show the bladder; however, evaluation of bladder disease usually requires a dedicated pelvic MRI or MR urography. Ask your radiologist or check the specific scan protocol to confirm.

To prepare for an MR urogram: drink plenty of water beforehand unless told to fast for 4 to 6 hours; you may need an empty bladder at certain times so follow instructions. Inform staff about kidney disease, allergies, pregnancy or implants; recent blood tests for kidney function may be required for gadolinium contrast. Remove jewelry and metal, wear loose clothing, bring prior imaging, and arrive early for paperwork and possible IV placement.
