An MRI of the temporomandibular joint visualizes joint anatomy and soft tissues: disc position and shape, disc displacement or perforation, joint effusion, synovial inflammation, and muscle or ligament pathology. It detects bone marrow edema, early degenerative or osteoarthritic changes of the condyle and fossa, ankylosis, cysts or masses, and can assess disc mobility and joint mechanics during mouth opening.

Left-sided TMJ pain often stems from muscle strain from chewing, clenching or teeth grinding, disc displacement, or an uneven bite. It can also come from localized arthritis, recent jaw injury, dental problems, or referred pain from the ear or sinuses. A TMJ MRI typically takes about 20–45 minutes of scanning. Total appointment time, including dressing, positioning, instructions, and any contrast injection, is usually 30–60 minutes. Scanning both joints or adding sequences can lengthen the exam. Staying still is important for clear images; ask the radiology team for the expected duration in your specific case.

MRI is the preferred scan for TMJ problems because it visualizes the articular disc, joint capsule and soft tissues and detects inflammation or internal derangement. Cone-beam CT or conventional CT is superior for assessing bony structures, fractures and arthritic bone changes. Choice depends on the clinical question—soft-tissue versus bony pathology—and should be guided by your clinician.

Diagnosis of TMJ disorder is primarily clinical—medical history and physical exam (palpation, jaw range of motion, joint sounds, occlusion). Imaging confirms findings: panoramic X‑ray or CT/CBCT for bony changes, MRI for disc position and soft tissues. Arthroscopy, diagnostic joint injection or aspiration are used selectively; electromyography and bite analysis may help in complex cases.

Prices vary by country and facility. In India, a TMJ MRI typically costs about ₹2,000–₹10,000. In the UK it’s free on the NHS when clinically indicated; private scans usually run about £200–£700.
