Thoracic spine MRI can show disc degeneration and herniation, spinal stenosis and foraminal narrowing, vertebral fractures and bone marrow edema, tumors or metastases, infection (discitis/osteomyelitis, epidural abscess), spinal cord changes (compression, myelopathy, demyelinating lesions), ligamentous or post‑operative changes, and congenital anomalies. Contrast-enhanced MRI can help distinguish tumor from infection and highlight active inflammation or abscess.

Thoracic spine nerve damage can cause sharp, burning or shooting pain that wraps around the chest or abdomen in a band. Other symptoms include numbness, tingling or pins-and-needles, sensory loss, muscle weakness or heaviness in the trunk or legs, reduced reflexes, and gait or balance problems. Severe or progressive cases may cause bowel or bladder dysfunction and signs of spinal cord compression.

Worry and seek urgent medical review if MRI shows acute findings—hemorrhage, stroke, mass lesion, spinal cord compression, or contrast‑enhancing lesions suggestive of infection or tumor—or if you have new/worsening symptoms such as sudden weakness, vision loss, seizures, severe headache or confusion. Incidental or chronic changes can be benign, but all results should be correlated with symptoms and discussed promptly with your clinician or a specialist for appropriate follow‑up.
