An MRI cervical spine is a noninvasive magnetic resonance imaging scan of the neck that creates detailed images of vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal cord, nerve roots and soft tissues. It helps diagnose causes of neck pain, radiculopathy, myelopathy, trauma, infection or tumors. The test uses magnetic fields and radio waves (no ionizing radiation), may use contrast, takes about 15–60 minutes, and requires metal screening beforehand.

Cervical spine MRI costs vary widely. In the US a scan can range roughly $400–$3,500 (out‑of‑pocket with insurance often much lower). In the UK public scans are free; privately roughly £150–£600. In India prices often fall around ₹2,000–₹7,000. Exact fees depend on location, facility type (hospital vs imaging center) and whether contrast is used.

Before a cervical spine MRI: wear loose, metal-free clothing or change into a gown; remove jewelry, hairpins, hearing aids and removable dental appliances. Tell staff about implants, pacemakers, prior surgeries, pregnancy, kidney problems or contrast allergies. Bring prior scans and arrive early. Expect loud noises; you’ll lie still for about 15–45 minutes. If claustrophobic, discuss mild sedation beforehand.

Allow additional time for registration, changing, and positioning—so the full appointment often lasts 30–90 minutes.
