A skull MRI images the brain, cranial nerves, skull base soft tissues, sinuses, orbits and inner ear structures, plus bone marrow changes. It detects tumors, stroke, acute or chronic hemorrhage, infections, inflammation, demyelinating disease, vascular abnormalities (with MR angiography), pituitary and post‑surgical changes. MRI is superior for soft tissue and neural detail but less sensitive than CT for acute skull fractures and fine bone detail.

A skull MRI typically takes about 20–45 minutes for standard scans, though simple exams can be as short as 15 minutes and complex studies up to an hour. If contrast dye is used, add roughly 10–30 minutes for injection and monitoring. Arrival, preparation and paperwork may add further time, so expect a total appointment of about 30–90 minutes.

Best scan for the skull is a CT scan — non-contrast head CT with bone windows (often with 3D reconstruction) — because it shows fine bony detail and detects fractures, displaced fragments, and acute skull-base injuries. MRI is superior for brain, soft tissue, marrow changes, or suspected osteomyelitis; plain X‑rays are less sensitive and largely replaced by CT for detailed bony assessment.

An MRI head scan detects structural and tissue abnormalities in the brain and nearby structures. It’s used to diagnose tumors, stroke and ischemia, bleeding, aneurysms and vascular malformations, infections (abscess, encephalitis), multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases, traumatic brain injury, hydrocephalus, congenital anomalies, and causes of persistent headaches or seizures. It’s also used to monitor treatment response and disease progression.

MRI can detect many types of brain injury—bleeds, strokes, tumours, swelling, contusions, inflammation and structural changes from trauma. Specialized sequences (diffusion, susceptibility, FLAIR) improve detection of acute ischemia, microbleeds and demyelination. However, MRI may miss microscopic axonal injury or early metabolic/functional damage; clinical assessment and sometimes other tests (CT, PET, EEG) are often needed for full evaluation.

MRI images are available immediately on the scanner’s system, but a formal radiologist report usually isn’t instant. In emergencies, radiologists or clinicians can review and communicate critical findings right away. Routine interpretations typically take hours to a few days before your referring doctor discusses results and next steps. Ask staff about expected timing and whether you’ll get a preliminary or final report.
