MRI of the right hip will show high-resolution images of bone, cartilage, the acetabular labrum, joint space, bone marrow, and surrounding muscles, tendons, ligaments and bursae. It can detect fractures, bone‑marrow edema, osteoarthritis with cartilage loss, labral tears, avascular necrosis, tendinopathy or tears (gluteal, iliopsoas), bursitis, synovitis, infection or tumors. Contrast improves detection of inflammation and infection.

A hip MRI primarily focuses on the hip joint, proximal femur and surrounding soft tissues; modern hip MRI scans often include the upper (proximal) thigh muscles and tendons within the field of view. However, MRI protocols vary—if you need assessment of the entire thigh or mid/distal thigh structures, request a dedicated thigh MRI to ensure complete coverage.

A hip MRI’s cost varies widely by country and setting. In India it typically runs about ₹2,000–₹10,000. In the UK it’s free on the NHS for eligible patients; privately it’s roughly £200–£700. In the US prices range from about $400 to $3,500+ (higher with contrast or in hospitals). Insurance, location, and use of contrast greatly affect final cost.

An MRI of the right hip typically takes about 20–45 minutes for standard sequences. If contrast (gadolinium) is required, add roughly 10–20 minutes for injection and extra scanning. Preparation and positioning may add 10–20 minutes, so the whole appointment is usually 30–90 minutes. Exact timing varies by facility, imaging protocol, and whether additional views or report review are needed.

A hip MRI can often identify structural causes of nerve problems—such as a mass, inflammation, scarring, compression, or entrapment—and show indirect signs of nerve injury like muscle denervation or atrophy. Standard MRI may not directly visualize tiny peripheral nerve fiber damage; dedicated MR neurography images nerves better. Electrophysiological tests (EMG/nerve conduction) and clinical correlation are often needed to confirm functional nerve injury.

Initial assessment usually starts with a plain X‑ray to detect fractures, arthritis, or major bony changes. If X‑rays are normal but pain persists or soft‑tissue, labral tear, stress fracture, or avascular necrosis is suspected, MRI is the best next scan for detailed bone marrow and soft‑tissue visualization. CT is reserved for complex fractures or surgical planning; ultrasound helps assess effusions.
