MRI Scan KUB, in Visit Clinic

A KUB MRI scan images the kidneys, ureters and bladder using magnetic fields and radio waves. It noninvasively evaluates causes of abdominal or urinary symptoms—stones, obstruction, tumors, infections or congenital anomalies—without ionizing radiation. Scans may use IV contrast for better detail. The test requires lying still in the scanner for 20–45 minutes; metal implants or certain devices can be contraindications.

Plain abdominal X‑ray (KUB) can detect some kidney issues—mainly radio‑opaque renal stones, large calcifications, and gross anatomical shifts. It has poor sensitivity for small or radiolucent stones, soft‑tissue lesions, infections, or detailed obstruction. Ultrasound and non‑contrast CT are preferred for most kidney assessments; KUB is mainly used for initial screening or follow‑up of known radio‑opaque calculi.

Yes. MRI provides detailed, non‑ionizing images of kidney structure and blood vessels, detecting tumors, cysts, scarring, congenital anomalies, vascular problems and obstructions. MR urography or angiography can assess function and blood flow. It is less sensitive than CT for calcified stones. Gadolinium contrast improves accuracy but is used cautiously in severe kidney failure; other tests may be preferred.

A KUB (kidneys, ureters, bladder) is a plain abdominal X-ray. You'll remove metal and wear a gown, then lie or stand while the radiographer positions you. One or more images are taken—usually supine and often upright—to assess stones, obstructions or gas patterns. The scan is quick and painless, requires no contrast, but tell staff if you’re pregnant. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly during exposures; protective shielding may be used.

A plain KUB X‑ray can sometimes show causes of blockage—radiopaque kidney stones and bowel gas patterns suggesting bowel obstruction—but it often misses radiolucent stones, ureteral or soft‑tissue blockages, and subtle hydronephrosis. More sensitive tests (renal ultrasound for hydronephrosis or non‑contrast CT abdomen/pelvis for stones and ureteral obstruction) are usually recommended.

To check KUB (kidneys, ureters, bladder): begin with history, physical exam, urine analysis and blood tests (creatinine, eGFR). Imaging options include ultrasound for kidneys/bladder, a plain KUB X‑ray for radiopaque stones, and non‑contrast CT (CT KUB) as the gold standard for suspected stones. Further tests: urine culture, intravenous urography or cystoscopy for structural or bladder concerns.
