An MRI arthrogram combines MRI imaging with a small contrast injection into a joint to outline cartilage, ligaments, labrum and joint surfaces more clearly. It’s used to detect tears, instability, cartilage defects, loose bodies, and subtle labral or ligament injuries—especially in the shoulder and hip—when standard MRI is inconclusive or for preoperative planning.

An MR arthrogram isn’t always “better,” but it is more sensitive than a standard MRI for detecting small intra‑articular injuries (labral, cartilage or ligament tears), especially in the shoulder and hip and after surgery. It requires an injected contrast agent, so it’s more invasive and carries small risks. A standard MRI is noninvasive and usually adequate for many soft‑tissue or extra‑articular problems.

An MRI arthrogram typically costs about $700–$3,000 in the United States if paying out of pocket; private clinics in the UK charge roughly £300–£1,000; in India prices commonly range ₹5,000–₹20,000. Recovery after an MRI arthrogram is usually quick. Most people can go home and resume normal light activities the same day, though you may have local soreness, swelling, bruising or stiffness for 24–48 hours. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours, use ice and over‑the‑counter pain relief as needed, and contact your clinician for severe pain, fever, spreading redness, numbness or allergic symptoms.

MR arthrography can evaluate many synovial joints, most commonly the shoulder and hip, and also the wrist (TFCC), elbow, knee, ankle and subtalar joints, temporomandibular and sacroiliac joints. It can also assess acromioclavicular and sternoclavicular joints and other small joints when indicated. Contrast is injected into the joint to outline labral, ligamentous, cartilage and intra‑articular soft‑tissue injuries.

An MRI arthrogram is generally safe, but risks include temporary pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site, transient stiffness, and vasovagal reactions. Rare complications are infection, bleeding, or an allergic reaction to contrast. Gadolinium-based contrast carries a very small risk in severe kidney disease. Tell your clinician about allergies, pregnancy, or blood-thinning medications beforehand.
