MRI Scan Anorectum, in Visit Clinic

Anorectal MRI is a specialized magnetic resonance scan of the rectum and anal canal that produces high‑resolution, multiplanar images. It evaluates anorectal anatomy and pathology—including rectal cancer staging, anal sphincter defects, fistulas, abscesses and pelvic floor disorders—without ionizing radiation. The scan may use contrast, is noninvasive, usually lasts 20–40 minutes, and guides diagnosis, treatment planning and surgery.

MRI can visualize pelvic and perianal anatomy and may show large or complicated hemorrhoids, but it is not a routine or sensitive test for diagnosis. Hemorrhoids are usually diagnosed clinically by inspection, digital rectal exam, anoscopy, or endoscopy. MRI is typically reserved for assessing complications (thrombosis, abscess, fistula) or excluding other pelvic pathology when clinical findings are unclear.

An abdominal MRI begins with screening for metal, pregnancy and contrast allergies; you change into a gown and remove belongings. You lie supine in the scanner with coils over the abdomen. Sequences take multiple breath-holds while the machine records images; the technologist communicates throughout. An intravenous gadolinium contrast may be given. Total scan time is usually 20–60 minutes; remaining still is essential.

MRI provides detailed, non‑ionizing evaluation of anorectal malformations by delineating pelvic anatomy, the rectal pouch level, sphincter complex, and any fistulous tracts. It detects associated spinal or genitourinary anomalies and sacral dysplasia. Preoperative MRI guides surgical planning and reconstruction and helps assess postoperative anatomy and complications, improving functional outcome prediction and tailored management.

An anorectal test assesses the structure and function of the anus and rectum to diagnose causes of pain, bleeding, constipation, incontinence or infection. It may include visual inspection, digital rectal examination, anoscopy/proctoscopy, endoscopy, imaging, biopsy or anorectal manometry. These procedures detect hemorrhoids, fissures, tumors, abscesses or muscle/nerve problems and help guide treatment.

Anorectal symptoms are signs affecting the anus and rectum, including pain or burning during or after bowel movements; rectal bleeding or bright red blood on stool; itching or irritation; mucus or abnormal discharge; lumps, swelling or prolapse; tenesmus (a persistent urge to defecate) and changes in bowel habits such as constipation, painful stools, or fecal incontinence. These warrant medical assessment.
