MRI is a general imaging modality, not inherently an angiogram or venogram. Specific MRI techniques—MR angiography (MRA) and MR venography (MRV)—are used to visualize arteries and veins, respectively. These MR methods can be performed with or without contrast to provide noninvasive vascular images, whereas conventional angiography typically involves catheter insertion and iodinated contrast.

An MR venogram is performed to visualize the body’s veins and detect abnormalities such as blood clots (including cerebral venous sinus thrombosis), venous stenosis or compression, malformations, and chronic venous insufficiency. It helps locate blockages, assess disease extent, plan interventions or surgery, and monitor treatment. The test is noninvasive and provides detailed, contrast-enhanced images of venous anatomy and flow.

An MRI venogram typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes for the scan itself. With contrast injection, positioning and prep, expect 45 to 90 minutes total at the facility. Scans of smaller areas (for example, head or neck) may be 20 to 30 minutes, while more extensive studies take longer. Ask your imaging center for exact timing and any preparation instructions.

MRI angiography (MRA) is a noninvasive imaging technique that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of blood vessels. It can be performed with or without a gadolinium contrast agent to detect aneurysms, stenosis, blockages, or vascular malformations. Advantages include no ionizing radiation; contraindications include some implants and caution with pregnancy or severe kidney disease.

A venogram is an imaging test that visualizes veins by injecting contrast dye and taking X-ray or fluoroscopic images. It shows blood flow, detects clots, blockages, venous malformations, or valvular problems, and helps guide treatment. Performed under local anesthesia, it can cause contrast reactions, bruising, or infection; disclose kidney disease or iodine allergy beforehand.

An MRI typically takes 15–90 minutes. Simple scans (e.g., single joint or limb) often require 15–30 minutes; common head or spine exams usually take 20–45 minutes. Studies needing contrast or multiple sequences can take 45–90 minutes. Allow extra time for check-in, changing clothes and IV placement—plan for 30–60 minutes total at the facility.
