MRI Scan Angiography Urography, in Visit Clinic

MRI urography (MR urography) is a noninvasive MRI technique that images kidneys, ureters and bladder. It uses T2-weighted sequences to show fluid-filled structures and T1-weighted contrast-enhanced sequences to assess anatomy and urinary excretion. MR urography evaluates obstruction, tumors, congenital anomalies and urinary leaks without ionizing radiation. Gadolinium contrast may improve detail but is used cautiously in severe renal impairment.

Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a noninvasive imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to visualize blood vessels and blood flow. It can use gadolinium contrast or specialized non‑contrast techniques to detect aneurysms, stenosis, occlusions and vascular malformations. MRA avoids ionizing radiation, but contrast risks and incompatibility with some implants should be discussed with clinicians.

MRI may be recommended when blood in urine is unexplained or a mass is suspected, to evaluate kidneys, ureters and bladder with excellent soft-tissue detail; it helps detect tumors, congenital or acquired structural abnormalities, vascular lesions and inflammatory changes. MRI is preferred when CT contrast is contraindicated or radiation should be avoided, and for tumor staging or preoperative planning to guide management.

Urography is an imaging test that visualizes the urinary tract—kidneys, ureters and bladder—using contrast-enhanced X‑ray or CT. It helps detect kidney stones, tumors, strictures or congenital anomalies, evaluates urinary tract obstruction and kidney function or drainage, and investigates causes of blood in the urine, recurrent infections or unexplained flank pain to guide diagnosis and treatment.

Urography (IV or CT urography) is generally not painful. Most people feel only mild discomfort — a brief sting at the injection site, warmth or a metallic taste when contrast is injected, and an urge to urinate. Rarely, allergic reactions or kidney-related complications occur. Tell your clinician about allergies, asthma, or reduced kidney function before the test.

Before an MR urogram, arrange kidney-function testing (creatinine/eGFR) and report allergies or prior contrast reactions. Follow fasting and hydration instructions from your imaging center (often nothing to eat 4–6 hours; drink clear fluids), review medications (including metformin), and inform staff about pregnancy or implants/metal. Remove jewellery, arrive early for paperwork/IV placement, and follow bladder instructions provided.
