An MRI of the brain typically takes 20–45 minutes; a cervical‑spine MRI usually takes 15–30 minutes. If both areas are scanned in one session, expect about 30–60 minutes (sometimes up to 90 minutes) depending on sequences and image quality. Arrival, positioning and any contrast injection can add another 15–30 minutes to the total appointment.

MRI brain screening is a noninvasive imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of the brain. It can detect tumors, stroke, bleeding, aneurysms, infections, structural abnormalities, and some degenerative changes. It involves no ionizing radiation but isn’t routinely recommended for asymptomatic people because of limited benefit, possible incidental findings, contrast risks, and implant contraindications.

A spinal MRI images the spine and spinal cord only and does not routinely include the brain. Standard lumbar, thoracic or cervical spine scans focus on vertebrae, discs and the spinal canal; the brain is scanned separately when clinically indicated. If symptoms suggest central nervous system involvement (headache, stroke signs, unexplained neurological deficits), a combined brain-and-spine MRI or an additional brain MRI may be ordered.

Yes. Brain and cervical (neck) MRI studies are commonly performed sequentially in a single visit. Technologists may change coils or table position, so the combined exam takes longer than a single-region scan; contrast can be given once if needed. It’s safe if standard MRI contraindications are absent, but you must tolerate a longer, still period. Discuss symptoms with your radiologist to tailor the protocol.

A cervical spine MRI is designed to image the neck, spinal cord, and vertebrae, not the brain. It may incidentally capture the lower brainstem or cerebellum and could detect lesions that extend into the upper cervical cord, but it is not reliable for diagnosing brain tumors. If a brain tumor is suspected, a dedicated brain MRI with contrast and specialist review is needed.
