A CNS MRI is a noninvasive imaging test that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of the central nervous system — the brain and spinal cord. It helps diagnose tumors, stroke, inflammation, infection, demyelinating disease (like multiple sclerosis), congenital anomalies and trauma. Contrast dye may be used for clarity and has specific safety considerations, such as certain implants and pregnancy.

MRI is the primary imaging modality for central nervous system evaluation because it provides excellent soft‑tissue contrast and multiplanar detail. It detects tumors, stroke (including diffusion‑weighted changes), demyelinating disease, infections, congenital anomalies and vascular lesions, and guides surgical planning. MRI is non‑ionizing and useful for monitoring disease progression and treatment response, with sequences (T1, T2, FLAIR, DWI, contrast, MRA) offering targeted information.

A CNS scan is an imaging test of the central nervous system—the brain and spinal cord—used to diagnose tumors, stroke, infection, inflammation, degenerative disease, trauma, or structural anomalies. The two main types of brain MRI are structural (anatomical) MRI and functional MRI (fMRI). Structural MRI produces detailed images of brain anatomy—gray and white matter, ventricles, lesions—used for diagnosis and surgical planning. Functional MRI measures blood-flow changes linked to neural activity, mapping brain function, activation areas and connectivity for research and pre-surgical assessment.

CNS stands for the central nervous system. It consists of the brain and spinal cord, which process sensory input, generate motor outputs, and regulate autonomic functions such as breathing and heart rate. The CNS enables thinking, memory, emotion, voluntary movement, and reflexes, integrating information from the peripheral nervous system to coordinate behavior and maintain homeostasis.

A brain MRI can detect many neurological problems: tumors, strokes, hemorrhages, inflammation or infection, demyelinating lesions (e.g., MS), vascular malformations, structural abnormalities, and atrophy. It images brain anatomy and, with special sequences or contrast, blood flow and acute ischemia. However, MRI can miss functional disorders, some early neurodegenerative or small-fiber conditions, and often requires correlation with clinical exam and other tests.
