An MRI brain with MR venogram is a non‑invasive imaging test that combines standard MRI of the brain with MR venography to visualize cerebral veins and dural sinuses. It uses magnetic fields (and sometimes gadolinium contrast) to detect venous thrombosis, sinus stenosis, vascular malformations, tumors, or stroke-related changes. It avoids ionizing radiation but may be unsuitable with some implants or severe kidney impairment.

An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) produces detailed images of organs, tissues and structures using magnetic fields and radio waves for diagnosing many conditions. An MR venogram (MRV) is a specialized MRI focused on veins—commonly cerebral or peripheral—using dedicated sequences (time-of-flight or contrast-enhanced) to map venous anatomy and detect thrombosis, stenosis or malformations; it highlights venous flow rather than general tissue detail.

A brain venogram (CT or MR venography) is an imaging test that visualizes cerebral veins and dural sinuses to detect clots, malformations, or flow abnormalities. It uses IV contrast with CT or MRI sequences to map venous anatomy. The scan is noninvasive, relatively quick, and may cause allergic reactions, contrast-related kidney effects, or rare IV injection complications.

An MRI venogram (MRV) noninvasively images veins and blood flow, most commonly in the brain or neck. It maps venous anatomy, detects thrombosis or narrowing, identifies congenital or acquired malformations, compression by tumors, and venous insufficiency. MRV helps confirm causes of headaches, stroke-like symptoms, swelling, or unexplained neurological signs and guides treatment planning without ionizing radiation.

A doctor orders a brain MRV to visualize cerebral veins and dural sinuses, primarily to detect venous sinus thrombosis, stenosis, or malformations that can cause severe headache, raised intracranial pressure (papilledema), seizures, focal neurological deficits, or stroke-like symptoms. It aids diagnosis, treatment planning, or follow-up of venous abnormalities and is used when venous pathology is suspected or other imaging is inconclusive.

A brain MRI scan typically takes 20 to 60 minutes for the imaging itself. Simple studies may finish in 15 to 30 minutes, while detailed or multi‑sequence exams can last up to an hour. If contrast dye is needed, add about 10 to 20 minutes for injection and waiting. Allow extra time for registration, safety screening and positioning, so plan on 30 to 90 minutes at the facility.
