MRE is painless, safe, and generally more accurate than many blood tests or ultrasound for assessing tissue stiffness.

MRE is highly accurate and reproducible for detecting and staging liver fibrosis, especially advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis, with sensitivity and specificity commonly above 90%. It outperforms ultrasound elastography and provides quantitative, whole‑liver stiffness maps. Limitations include reduced accuracy with severe iron overload, motion/ascites, and limited availability and cost. MRE is noninvasive and useful for monitoring progression.

Some may experience mild discomfort if they’re tender, obese, or have a full abdomen. MR elastography can be noisier and involve breath‑holding, but serious complications are rare.

An MRE (magnetic resonance elastography) usually takes about 15–45 minutes, with many liver MREs completed in roughly 30 minutes. Allow extra time for check‑in, changing, positioning and any IV or additional MRI sequences—so expect the appointment to be about 30–60 minutes total.
