HRCT thorax (high-resolution CT of the chest) produces detailed cross-sectional images of the lungs and airways. It’s used to detect and characterise lung conditions such as interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis, emphysema, small nodules, scarring, and certain infections. It helps assess disease extent, monitor progression or treatment response, and guide clinical decisions or further testing.

HRCT thorax (high-resolution CT) uses very thin slices and lung-window reconstructions without contrast to detail lung parenchyma—ideal for interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis, emphysema and subtle airways disease (often with inspiratory and expiratory scans). CECT thorax uses intravenous contrast and standard slices to assess mediastinum, vessels, lymph nodes and enhancing lesions—better for tumors, infection, staging and vascular evaluation (e.g., pulmonary embolism protocols).

High-resolution CT (HRCT) can detect radiologic features suggestive of pulmonary tuberculosis—cavities, consolidations, centrilobular nodules/tree-in-bud patterns, lymphadenopathy, and pleural effusion. It’s useful for assessing extent and complications and when chest X-ray is inconclusive, but imaging alone cannot definitively diagnose TB. Microbiological confirmation (sputum smear/culture or molecular tests) is required for diagnosis and treatment decisions.

High-resolution CT (HRCT) of the chest is generally safe and valuable for diagnosing lung disease, but it uses ionizing radiation—exposure is higher than a chest X‑ray. Risk of radiation-induced cancer is small but cumulative; special precautions apply for pregnant people and children. Non-contrast HRCT avoids contrast risks; if contrast is used, rare allergic or kidney-related reactions can occur. Discuss risks and benefits with your clinician.

HRCT thorax costs vary by country and facility: in India approximately ₹1,500–₹6,000 at private centres; in the United States typical fees range from $300–$3,000 (higher in hospitals), while in the UK it’s free on the NHS for eligible patients or about £120–£400 privately. Final price depends on location, facility type, and add‑ons such as contrast or radiologist reporting.

For an HRCT thorax, wear comfortable, loose clothing without metal fastenings (zippers, buttons) and avoid jewelry, belts, metal hair clips, or underwire bras. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown. Keep layers easy to remove and leave valuables at home. Tell staff about implants (pacemakers, metal hardware) or pregnancy before the scan.
