HRCT of the ear (temporal bone) is a high-resolution CT scan that provides detailed images of the tiny bony structures of the middle and inner ear. It’s used to evaluate chronic infections, cholesteatoma, hearing loss, trauma, congenital anomalies and for preoperative planning. The test is quick and noninvasive but uses low-dose ionizing radiation; contrast is rarely required.

A head CT can detect many ear-related structural problems, especially bony abnormalities: temporal bone fractures, mastoid air‑cell infection (mastoiditis), cholesteatoma, ossicular erosion and some congenital bony malformations. CT is excellent for bone detail but less sensitive for inner‑ear soft tissue, nerve or membranous labyrinth pathology—MRI is preferred for those. Clinical correlation with ENT is recommended.

A high-resolution CT (HRCT) scan provides detailed, high-definition images of the lungs and airways to detect and characterize lung parenchymal diseases. It’s used to diagnose and stage interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis, emphysema, small airway disease and occult infections, to assess disease extent and severity, guide treatment decisions, and monitor progression or response to therapy.

High-resolution CT of the temporal bones (thin-slice, 0.5–1 mm axial and coronal reconstructions) without contrast is the preferred CT for bony ear anatomy—mastoid, ossicles, cochlea, and facial canal. For soft-tissue, nerve, or suspected tumor assessment, MRI with contrast is superior. Pediatric dosing and pregnancy require special consideration; discuss indications with your clinician.

An ear CT scan is generally painless and non‑invasive. You lie on a table that passes through the scanner; the imaging itself doesn’t hurt. Occasionally contrast dye is used, which can cause a brief sting, warmth, or rarely an allergic reaction. Some people feel discomfort from lying still, anxiety or claustrophobia, and young children may need sedation. Radiation exposure is short and controlled.

ENT evaluation of the inner ear uses hearing and balance tests. Pure‑tone audiometry measures hearing thresholds; tympanometry assesses middle‑ear function; auditory brainstem response (ABR) evaluates neural conduction. Vestibular testing includes videonystagmography/ENG (VNG/ENG), caloric testing, the video head‑impulse test (vHIT) and Dix‑Hallpike for BPPV. MRI is used if structural or central causes are suspected.
