An HCV spot test is a rapid point-of-care screening test that detects antibodies to hepatitis C virus from a small finger‑prick or blood sample using a lateral‑flow device. It gives results in minutes to identify people who may have been exposed; a positive spot test requires confirmatory HCV RNA testing to determine active infection. It's used for quick outreach and screening.

HCV positive means tests have detected hepatitis C virus markers. A positive antibody test shows past exposure; a positive HCV RNA (PCR) test indicates active infection. Hepatitis C spreads through blood (sharing needles, untested transfusions, needlestick injuries) and can cause chronic liver inflammation, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Effective oral direct-acting antiviral treatments can cure most infections; specialist care and repeat testing are advised.

A normal HCV result is a negative HCV antibody and undetectable HCV RNA. Modern RNA tests report “not detected” or below the assay’s lower limit (commonly <15 IU/mL); values below that are considered no active infection. Any detectable HCV RNA (any IU/mL above the limit) indicates active infection and requires clinical follow‑up and treatment evaluation.

Hepatitis C (HCV) can be serious. While some acute infections are mild or asymptomatic, many become chronic and may cause progressive liver damage, cirrhosis, liver failure, and increased risk of liver cancer. It spreads mainly by blood contact. Modern direct-acting antiviral treatment cures most people if diagnosed early, so screening and timely treatment are important to prevent long-term complications.

HCV is first screened with an anti‑HCV antibody test; a reactive result is followed by HCV RNA PCR to confirm active infection. HCV core antigen testing may be used when RNA testing isn’t available. Once RNA‑positive, genotype testing guides therapy and baseline liver assessment (ALT, fibrosis staging with blood scores, elastography or biopsy) informs treatment and monitoring; repeat RNA at 6 months confirms chronicity.

Hepatitis C is often asymptomatic, especially early. When symptoms occur they can include fatigue, low-grade fever, nausea, abdominal pain, dark urine, pale stools, and jaundice. Chronic infection may cause persistent fatigue, poor appetite, weight loss, itchy skin, joint pain, easy bruising, abdominal swelling and confusion with advanced liver disease. Get tested if you have risk factors or abnormal liver tests.
