The ALP (alkaline phosphatase) test measures levels of an enzyme found mainly in liver, bones and bile ducts. Elevated or low ALP can indicate liver disease, bile duct obstruction, bone disorders, or growth-related changes. It's ordered with liver panels or bone investigations, and abnormal results prompt further tests (bilirubin, GGT, bone markers) to identify the underlying cause.

The main non‑invasive test for assessing extended (advanced) liver fibrosis is transient elastography (FibroScan), which measures liver stiffness. Alternatives include MR elastography (more accurate), serum fibrosis scores (FibroTest/FibroSure, APRI, FIB‑4) and conventional ultrasound. When non‑invasive tests are inconclusive or precise staging is needed, percutaneous liver biopsy remains the diagnostic gold standard.

If an AFP test is positive (elevated or abnormal), it doesn’t confirm a problem. Your clinician will recheck dates and repeat the blood test, then perform a detailed ultrasound to look for neural tube or abdominal wall defects and multiple pregnancy. They may offer diagnostic testing (amniocentesis) and specialist referral. Causes include incorrect dating, twins, or fetal anomalies; follow-up testing and counseling are recommended.

An extended blood test is a comprehensive panel of blood assays beyond routine checks, combining complete blood count with additional chemistry (liver, kidney, electrolytes), lipid profile, thyroid function, inflammatory markers (CRP), vitamins (B12, D), coagulation tests and specific infection or autoimmune markers. It helps detect, diagnose, and monitor chronic conditions, nutritional deficiencies, inflammation or organ dysfunction, and is tailored to clinical needs and screening goals.

Alpha testing uncovers major bugs and logic flaws early, allowing teams to fix core issues before broader release. It validates core functionality and usability, ensures feature alignment with requirements, and reduces later development costs and schedule delays. Early feedback from internal testers improves stability, performance, and user experience, increasing confidence that the product is ready for beta testing and eventual public release.

The blood tests used to diagnose alpha thalassemia start with a complete blood count (CBC) and peripheral smear showing microcytosis and hypochromia. Hemoglobin electrophoresis may be normal or show Hb Bart’s in neonates. Iron studies help exclude iron deficiency. Definitive diagnosis requires molecular genetic testing for alpha‑globin gene deletions or mutations (targeted PCR/MLPA); prenatal diagnosis uses CVS or amniocentesis with genetic analysis.
