A DTPA renogram is a nuclear medicine scan using a radiotracer (technetium-99m DTPA) to assess kidney perfusion, glomerular filtration and drainage. After intravenous injection, sequential gamma‑camera images measure split renal function, transit times and detect obstruction—often with a diuretic challenge to test outflow. It’s noninvasive, brief, and involves low radiation exposure.

DTPA stands for diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid. It is a synthetic chelating agent used to bind metal ions; in medicine it serves in diagnostic imaging (for example technetium‑99m DTPA renal scans) and in chelation therapy to remove certain heavy or radioactive metals, aiding renal function assessment and elimination of bound radionuclides effectively.

A DTPA scan is generally not painful. You may feel a brief pinch or sting when the IV injection is given and occasional mild discomfort from lying still. The scanning camera does not cause pain; most people only notice warmth from the tracer or slight pressure. Serious reactions are rare. The procedure is quick and typically well tolerated.

A DTPA scan is generally safe but carries a small radiation dose and rare allergic reactions. Other risks include local injection pain, bruising or extravasation, transient nausea or dizziness, and inaccurate or nondiagnostic results in severe kidney impairment, dehydration, or with interfering medications. The critical organ for DTPA is the kidney. DTPA (including calcium or zinc salts) forms water‑soluble chelates that are rapidly eliminated by glomerular filtration, so renal tissue receives the highest exposure and is at greatest risk. Renal function should be assessed and monitored before and during treatment, with dose adjustments for impaired kidney function.
